This morning I received an email from the Apple Developer Connection (ADC), indicating that the Mac OS X State of the Union sessions were available for download through iTunes. If you’re not a member of the ADC you might want to consider signing up as it’s full of useful information for developing applications under OS X.
The state of the union sessions cover some of the new developer features to be included in the next version of OS X, Leopard. The movie is about an hour and half long, the slides used are also available, and I’ve spent the last hour and a bit watching it since I could not afford to travel to WWDC ‘06.
If you have ever wondered how some of the up and coming technologies are implemented, or why Apple is moving their hardware in a certain direction, then you want to watch this movie. Some of the topics covered include:
- 32-bit Vs. 64-bit
- The software stack
- Multiple Core CPU’s
- Memory Management (Specifically garbage collection)
- The GPU
- Core Image
- Core Animation
- QTkit Capture API’s (for working with iSights etc.)
- iChat Theatre
- Spotlight
- Time Machine
- Servers
Each topic is covered in enough detail for even those with minimal programming knowledge to get the gist of what is going on. The really interesting topics are accompanied by demonstrations so that you can see how everything fits together.
I haven’t seen too much Open GL code, but what I have scares me. Which is why the Core Animation demo’s are a personal favorite of mine. They show how easy it is to work with animations, you don’t need to touch any Open GL code, and that can only be a good thing!
So head on over to the ADC and download the Leopard videos.
